IR theory is the study of the relations between agents within an international context. Commonly, this is taken to be the study of the strategic interactions between states and non-state actors within an international system. Transnational issues are also covered including human population transfers, the natural environment, international terrorism, human rights, etc. The theoretical side of IR theory reaches into areas traditionally covered by the human and social sciences. As a relatively new discipline (IR theory arose in the post-WWII era in the United States) there are many areas where IR theory may yet still very fruitfully draw from more traditional disciplines. The originality of IR theory is its 'international' component that forces theorists to somehow account for the holistic perspective, as well as the manifold parts.
