Firstly the pig iron is heated to about 1500- 1800 degrees centigrade for about an hour inside an inoculation furnace along with some other chemicals until it achieves a level where it is readily accepted by the dies. The material is then poured into stacks of sand pillars prepared from moldings, created using the die. It is then allowed to cool in air or oven, overnight depending upon the casting. Thereafter, runners & risers are removed to make individual cast rings, machinable. The rings are ground to a specific accuracy on axial width and sorted out for blowholes. Thereafter, they are turned for OD and ID on lathes. The free gap is created with / without heat treatment. Following which, gap sizing, chamfering, OD, grooving, slotting, I.D. grooving scrapper, beveling, keystone making or one side tapering is done, in accordance with the drawing or samples as per the specifications on compression rings, oil control rings. After this hard chrome plating is carried out for hours, depending on the specified plating thickness. This drastically improves wear resistance and provides low friction and good thermal conductivity. It also gives extremely high hardness and a high melting point.
